How to Work with Media in Storydoc

Learn how to add and edit images, videos, and icons in your Storydoc presentations.

Written by Jack

Storydoc lets you enrich your presentations with three main types of media: images, videos, and icons. This article walks you through how to add each type and what you can do with them once they're on your slide.

Adding an Image

To add an image, open the Elements menu on the right side of the editor and click the image icon (Add an image). This opens the image library panel.

Clicking the Add an image button in the right-hand Elements menu

You can source images from several places:

  • Stock images — Browse or search a library of high-quality photos powered by Unsplash

  • AI Generate — Let AI create an image for you

  • My Files — Upload your own image

  • Logo Finder — Find and insert company logos

  • GIFs — Add animated GIFs

Once you find the image you want, click it or drag and drop it onto your slide.

Editing an Image

When you select an image on your slide, a toolbar appears at the top with all available editing options. Here's what each one does:

  • Edit image — Change the image, crop it, delete it, apply a color overlay or black-and-white filter, or reset changes

  • Use AI — Replace the image using AI suggestions based on your content, or write a custom prompt

  • Align — Position the image on the slide

  • Crop — Trim the image

  • Shape — Change the shape of the image frame

  • Radius — Adjust the corner roundness

  • Shadow — Add a smooth or flat shadow, or remove it

  • Link — Attach a URL to the image

  • Anchor — Make the image an anchor point for navigation

  • Variables — Assign a custom image variable that can be changed for each version of that story

The Use AI option is especially handy — it suggests images relevant to your slide content, or you can enter your own description to generate something more specific.

Adding a Video

There are two ways to add a video to your slide.

Option 1: Click the video icon in the Elements menu on the right to open the video panel. You can choose from:

  • Stock videos — Browse or search ready-to-use video clips

  • My Files — Upload your own video file

  • YouTube, Loom, Vimeo, or Vidyard — Paste a link from any of these platforms

Option 2: If you already have an image on your slide and want to swap it for a video, right-click the image and go to Switch to… → Video. You can also switch it to a Grid or an Icon from the same menu.

Once your video is on the slide, drag and drop it wherever you need it. Click the video to select it and access the editing toolbar.

Editing a Video

The video toolbar includes most of the same options as the image toolbar — Edit video, Align, Shape, Radius, Shadow, Anchor, and Variables. You can also apply a color overlay or black-and-white filter, and replace the video with one from YouTube, Vimeo, Loom, or Vidyard.

Videos also have three unique settings found under the Settings button in the toolbar:

  • Autoplay — The video starts playing automatically when a reader reaches it. We recommend keeping this on — it's a great attention grabber.

  • Loop — The video repeats automatically after it ends.

  • Show controls — Displays play/pause controls. Only enable this if you want readers to actively watch the video. For background or mood videos, it's better to leave it off.

Just like with images you can also add variables to your videos, that can be changed for each version of that story.

Adding an Icon

Click the icon button in the Elements menu on the right to open the icon panel. You'll find three icon sets to choose from: Smooth link, Sharp, and Line.

We recommend sticking to one icon set throughout your presentation to keep a consistent visual style. You can search for a specific icon, browse all available icons, or let AI suggest icons that match your slide content.

Once you find the right icon, drag and drop it onto your slide. Clicking the icon reveals the toolbar, where you can:

  • Change icon — Swap it for a different one

  • Align — Position it on the slide

  • Icon color — Change the color

  • Link — Add a URL

  • Anchor — Set it as a navigation anchor

That covers the basics of working with media in Storydoc. Whether you're adding a stock photo, embedding a recording, or dropping in a consistent set of icons, you have full control over how your media looks and behaves.
