The Storydoc connector for ChatGPT lets you create, personalize, and manage your Storydoc presentations directly from ChatGPT's chat interface — no switching between tools required. This article walks you through connecting Storydoc to Claude and using it to generate stories with natural language.
How the Plugin Works
Once connected, you can use ChatGPT to perform various Storydoc actions including:
Generate new stories from scratch
Create versions from existing templates
Get analytics data
List available stories
Plan story versions with dynamic variables
Step 1: Install the Storydoc Plugin in ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT and click Plugins in the left sidebar. In the Plugins search bar, type Storydoc and select the Storydoc plugin from the results under the Public section.
Click the + icon next to the plugin to open its detail page, then click Install plugin. A dialog will appear asking you to add Storydoc to ChatGPT — click Sign in with Storydoc to continue.
Step 2: Connect Your Storydoc Account
After clicking Sign in with Storydoc, you'll be taken to the Connect to Storydoc screen. Here you need to paste your Storydoc API token to authorize the connection.
You can also add a Default sender email (optional). If you enter one here, ChatGPT will use it automatically for every deck it creates — so you won't be asked each time.
Step 3: Generate a Storydoc API Token
If you don't have an API token yet, click the Generate an API token here link on the Connect screen. This will take you to the Automations page in your Storydoc account.
Click + Create an API key. In the dialog that appears, give your key a name (e.g., "ChatGPT"), set the scope, and click Create.
Your new API key will be displayed. Important: This is a one-time view — copy the key immediately using the Copy to clipboard button before closing the dialog.
Go back to the Connect to Storydoc screen in ChatGPT, paste the key into the Storydoc API token field, fill in your sender email if you'd like, and click Connect.
Step 4: Confirm the Plugin is Installed
Once connected, ChatGPT will confirm that Storydoc is installed. You'll see the Storydoc plugin page with example prompts you can try right away — such as browsing your templates or generating a new deck.
Step 5: Create a Storydoc Presentation from Chat
Start a new chat and type a request like "Create a Storydoc proposal for Nike." ChatGPT will search your Storydoc templates and find the best match for your request.
ChatGPT will present a summary showing the selected template, title, recipient, company, and sender. Review the details, then type Confirm to proceed with creation.
Step 6: Access Your Created Story
After confirming, Storydoc will generate your presentation and ChatGPT will return both a share link and an editor link. Use the share link to send it to your recipient, or open the editor link to make any final tweaks in Storydoc.
You can click through to the story to verify it looks correct — recipient name, company, and sender details will all be pre-filled from the variables in your template.
More Things You Can Do with Storydoc in ChatGPT
Once connected, you can go well beyond creating a single deck. Here are some powerful things to try:
Generate from scratch: "Generate a Storydoc sales deck for an AI-powered customer support platform targeting mid-market SaaS companies. Bold, confident tone."
Pull analytics: "How is the Nike proposal performing? Who viewed it and which slides got the most attention?"
Browse templates: "List my Storydoc templates and show me what fields they need."
Create multiple versions: "Use my proposal template to create three decks: one for Nike with recipient Sarah, one for Adidas with recipient Marcus, and one for Puma with recipient Lin."
Chain actions: "Create a sales deck for Acme Corp, then tell me how my last three decks have been performing."
Tips for Better Results
Be specific about audience and tone when generating from scratch — "bold pitch for enterprise CTOs" gets better results than "sales deck."
Mention the recipient by name when personalizing a template — ChatGPT maps it to the correct variable automatically.
Select "Always allow" the first time you run a tool so future actions don't pause for approval.
Set a default sender email once during setup, and ChatGPT will use it for every future deck.
Include your company website URL when generating from scratch so Storydoc can pull your brand colors, logo, and imagery automatically.
Troubleshooting
Storydoc doesn't appear as a connector after adding it.
Quit and reopen ChatGPT completely (use ⌘Q on Mac, not just close the window). Connectors load on app start.
The API token connection fails.
Make sure you've generated a fresh API token in Storydoc under Automations. Older tokens may have been revoked. Generate a new one and paste it again.
ChatGPT says it can't find my templates.
Ask ChatGPT: "List my Storydoc templates." If the response is empty, check in Storydoc that you have at least one story in Live status with dynamic variables. Stories in Draft or Archived status are filtered out by default.
Variables aren't filled in on the created deck.
Variable names are case-sensitive. Ask ChatGPT: "Show me the variables for the [template name] template" to confirm the exact names before creating.
Generated decks look generic and don't match my brand.
Include your company website URL in the prompt when generating from scratch. Example: "Generate a sales deck for Acme. Our website is https://acme.com."
I'm hitting rate limits.
