Why automate Storydoc with Monday.com

Automating Storydoc creation from Monday.com allows you to:

  • Generate personalized documents automatically when items move through key stages.

  • Reduce manual work when preparing proposals, onboarding materials, or updates.

  • Keep Storydoc links attached to the relevant item so teams always have the right version.

  • Use Monday as a central system for both internal tracking and client-facing outputs.

Automation works through Zapier. For setup instructions, refer to the article How to Connect Storydoc with Zapier.

Valid Monday.com triggers you can use

The following triggers are officially available in Monday.com’s Zapier integration and represent common, widely used workflows.

1. New Item Created

Triggered when a new item is added to a board.

Common use cases:

  • Create a personalized Storydoc when a new lead, deal, or client is added.

  • Generate an onboarding or kickoff deck when a new project starts.

2. Item Status Changes

Triggered when a status column value changes.

Common use cases:

  • Generate a proposal when a status changes to “Proposal.”

  • Create onboarding materials when a status changes to “Onboarding.”

  • Generate a client update when a status changes to “Ready to Share.”

This is the most common and powerful trigger in Monday.com workflows.

3. Column Value Updated

Triggered when a specific column value is updated.

Common use cases:

  • Generate a new Storydoc when key fields such as owner, budget, or timeline are filled in.

  • Create updated Storydocs when important item details change.

Creating personalized Storydocs from Monday.com

Once a trigger is selected, Storydoc can generate a new version of a chosen template using Monday.com item data such as:

  • Item name

  • Company or account name

  • Deal value or project scope

  • Status

  • Owner or team member

  • Custom column values

These fields can be mapped to Dynamic Variables inside your Storydoc template so each version is personalized automatically.

Storing the Storydoc link back in Monday.com

After a Storydoc is created, the link should be stored directly on the relevant Monday item so it’s easy for the team to find and use.

Monday.com supports updating items via Zapier, allowing you to:

  • Write the Storydoc URL into a dedicated column (recommended).

  • Store the link in a text or long-text column.

  • Update an existing column with the latest Storydoc version.

This keeps the Storydoc tightly connected to the workflow item it was generated from.
